IDENTITY THEFT

What is identity theft? Identity theft occurs when someone obtains and illegally uses your identifying information such as a credit card, Social Security number, checking account number.
How do thieves get my information?
 By rummaging
through trash, phishing and spoofing scams, address changes and old fashion stealing.

What can I do to prevent ID theft? Review credit reports annually, review account statements promptly, shred documents before placing in the trash, and use extreme caution when giving information over the telephone and internet. (many web sites look official but are not the real thing)

What should I do if my ID is stolen? Place a fraud alert to the credit bureau, contact your financial institutions immediately, make a police report and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov.
